CD Reviews

Good try but ultimately disappointing.

"I suspect that your reaction to this DVD will vary depending on whether your preference is for Edgar's "White Trash" period or for his hit record period with such chart smashes as "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride." Edgar and his band do a cool version of "Frankenstein" and rock the house with "Free Ride." That's the good part. The material from his White Trash period comes off less well. Great songs like "Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll" and "Turn on Your Love Light" don't seem to register as well without a heavy duty horn section. Edgar's solo spot on "Fly Away" is good vocally and instrumentally but a tad repetitious on the choruses - it really needs some soulful background singers to push the gospel influence to the front. I felt that the recording of this tune suffered from too much crowd noise. It's one of Edgar Winter's more introspective tunes and should have had a quieter mix. The mix on this tune sounds like the sound man had a microphone placed in the crowd to get greater crowd reaction and make the mix sound more "real." Edgar's musicians are all aces and do well providing the backup. I have to respectfully disagree with reviewers who claim that the guitarist isn't all that good. Actually, he is an outstanding technician. The problem is that he sounds like any guy who went to either Berklee or the Guitar Institute and can play a thousand notes per minute but with no personality or soul. And speaking of the latter, this is the one quality most missing from this DVD. You don't need lots of notes or pyrotechnics to play soulfully but you have to play and sing from the gut. What makes this DVD so disappointing is that Edgar's Roadwork album is one of the greatest live recordings of all time - that band was truly on fire. If you really want to hear Edgar Winter live and well, be good to yourself and get a copy of Roadwork."
Just an ok DVD

"Come on, we're talking about Edgar Winter, the man behind "They Only Come Out At Night" and "White Trash"; the man that, at a particular time, played with two of the most expressive guitarrists of the rock canon, his own brother, Johnny Winter, and the monster Rick Derringer... How can I fire 5 stars to this DVD when I see an ordinary guitarrist playing (and ruinning) "Frankenstein" and "Free ride"... sad... the best instrumentist in this session, besides Edgar, of course, was the bass player... but that is not a plus, since the performances and renditions of fantastic songs is in just an average level... the show is 2 stars at the max... The sound and image of the DVD is fantastic, however, hence, an extra star. You deserve better sidemen, Edgar....

Would make a good purchase

"This is better than the DVD "Ohne Filter", which had rough edges. This DVD has good audio/video quality, band is good and Edgar does a good job on vocals, really great on the instruments. I've seen him live previously. If you want to get just one DVD of Edgar, this would be it."
