CD Reviews

Best since Expresso!
Carl Johnson | Detroit, MI United States | 11/12/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This record is well produced, played, written and conceptualized in the Gong-style fusion tradition. Bon really shows maturity in his writing and playing and the vibes by Benoit Moerlen, are featured exquisitly on this record. It is like a different band. Special guest David Fiuczynski on guitar has much to do with it. Aquila (Track 2) will satisfy all your need for dutifully, thought out jazz-hard rock fusion. It gets cranked in the car everytime. There isn't a bad song on this record! It is an achievement! Excellent spin!"
It's A Monster

"There's something immensely appealing about a marimba-based jazz band. Pianos are percussion instruments too, but in a piano the melody takes precedence. With a marimba at the heart, the rhythmic aspect becomes paramount and the whole band just swings harder, by necessity.

Gongzilla benefits from a great marimba & vibes man in Benoit Moerlen. Guitarist Bon Lozaga and bassist Hanny Rowe complete the sound with a comfortable jazz-rock fusion built from a mastery where they're equally at home laying back with a languid groove. Gary Husband (Allan Holdsworth) sits on the drum stool with equal credentials.

After two releases which bordered on the frantic at times, it's good to hear the band finally breathing through their noses on this one. In the two years I've owned a copy this CD has gotten a lot of play at my house, and it's always pleasantly surprising."
