CD Reviews

Disappointing
Al Inkster | Tucson, AZ United States | 06/15/2002
(2 out of 5 stars)

"I've listened to the complete set four times now, hoping that my initial judgment was mistaken. On first hearing my reaction was, "That is not the voice of Eartha Kitt." I read the notes, thinking that some lesser singer was doing a tribute to Eartha. Nope, the voice is supposed to be Eartha's. I fished out my old 45's bought when I first heard that wonderully sexy, playful voice back in the '50's, and compared the disc renditions of "C'est Si Bon," "Monotonous," and "Let's Do It" with those on the records. Memory had served me correctly. The brief set notes do not indicate from what originals these songs were remastered. If they were done from the same masters that my 45's are from, some sound engineer really goofed by "improving" the voice to what his ear prefers, perhaps not knowing what the voice fans loved sounded like or not himself liking the voice. Sadly, that happens with some CD reissues. Adding to the disappointment is that the collection has 50 interesting songs, some old favorites and many new to me, that I would love to hear by the real voice of Eartha Kitt."
Everything Eartha

"This is an amazing collection. Three full length wonderfully remastered cd's containing 50 of Eartha's best. The set contains most of the tracks found on Miss Kitt, To You, Purr-fect: Greatest Hits, and The Bad Eartha/Down to Eartha, plus a whole lot more. This is the best compilation you can get, short of buying the 5 cd Eartha Quake box set."
