CD Reviews

An Eartha collector's dream
O. Diaz | St. Petersburg, FL | 10/18/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The 24 tracks on this CD were originally released as two legendary EMI albums that Eartha recorded in England: The Romantic Eartha (1962) and Love For Sale (1965). It's safe to say that, aside from the career-defining tracks she recorded for RCA in the 50s, the standards presented here showcase Eartha at her essential best. Every mood is sampled, every emotion exposed - the lady is a force of nature, here is the final proof. The lush orchestral settings are dazzling but not overpowering, they beautifully complement Ms. Kitt's impeccable readings.

One minor objection: the original albums' track sequence is not preserved on this disc, although that can be easily corrected with the CD player's "program" function. The albums, as originally released, are as follows:

THE ROMANTIC EARTHA (1962)

1-I've got you under my skin. 2-When the world was young. 3-Wonderful illusion. 4-Solitude. 5-Easy to love. 6-September song. 7-You'll never know. 8-Speak low. 9-Happiness is just a thing called Joe. 10-Mirage.

11-Chez-moi. 12- In the still of the night.

LOVE FOR SALE (1965)

1-Love for sale. 2-Autumn leaves. 3-Boy from Ipanema. 4-Darling je vous aime beaucoup. 5-Too close for comfort. 6-Guess who I saw today. 7-C'est magnifique. 8-I wish you love. 9-My man. 10-Moon river. 11-The last time I saw Paris. 12-Love."

Kitt 'Collection' Features Two Classic Albums From Early 60'

""The Collection" is made of two complete albums, "The Romantic Eartha" (1962) and "Love For Sale" (1965) recorded in England with producer Norman Newell and Tony Osborne and His Orchestra. "The Romantic Eartha" is a traditional mood (pop/jazz)album featuring the works of Cole Porter and the like, while "Love For Sale" includes more contemporary works, including her wonderfully insightful version of the "The Boy From Ipanema". While not a highly successful recording artist during the 60's, these recordings testify that it wasn't for lack of quality product. These are fine, well produced recordings and Eartha is at the height of her considerable vocal prowess."
