A Necessity for Collectors

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Dvorak's operas are an acquired taste. His operas are not big in a Wagnerian sense, nor as intensely personal as Tchaikowsky's. But they have a flavor and passion all of their own. His best -- Russalka, Kate and the Devils, Dmitrij, Jacobin -- are unmatched for lyricism and clarity; but even his least have things to offer. This opera, Tvrde Palice (The Stubborn Lovers) has long been neglected in recordings and probably performances. It is not a great opera; but the present production certainly provides reason to listen. The recording is clear and professional, the best of Supraphon, often -- as now -- an equal to western producers. The singing is right on, although there are no great pyrotechnical demands (to my ears). Choral work is equal to the rest of the company.I've only listened three times to date. Based on that, I would say that the opera does not have an overarching appeal, but reaches the listener through many captivating moments. Perhaps on further listenings, I will catch the overall thread. For me, the many moments of loveliness are sufficient. Add to that the fact that this is the only available performance of this opera -- and such an excellent one at that -- and any collector and/or lover of Dvorak's music will want to have this CD."
