There are three major Dvorák works for violin and piano: the Violin Sonata in F, the four Romantic Pieces, and delightful little Sonatina, which isn't actually all that small. In fact, the name of this last piece is a sort of joke. Dvorák thought it would be funny to make his Op. 100 a lighthearted, unpretentious, and carefree piece with a diminutive name. And in fact it turned out to be a good strategy, as the Sonatina quickly became one of his most popular chamber pieces, both among performers and listeners. These performances, by two very experienced and adept chamber musicians, are wholly excellent, and Hyperion's recorded sound is equally distinguished. --David Hurwitz
