CD Reviews

Disappointing

"Perhaps I've been spoiled by the many fine recordings of these works already extant. If you're finding your way to Dutilleux for the first time, these might be enjoyable; however, save your money and go for the really upper tier recordings of this music. Dutilleux's music requires security in execution. It requires virtuosos in every seat of the ensemble. It requires a conductor who can pace and combine cathartic gestures and lyrical statements to build towards an overwhelming climax. And it requires excellent, crystal-clear recorded sound to let the listener bask and discover the many, many layers of detail in this music. The Arte Nova series of Dutilleux's orchestral works lack about 80% in all of these areas that is necessary. The complex wind passage-work is misplayed, faked or left out (or inaudible due to the muddy sonics) in many places. Intonation is quite horrible (compare the opening chord of this Metaboles to Tortelier's or Szell's) - the pungency of the harmonic language is completely lost when played out of tune. The percussion section is lost in many sections (or again far too softly recorded) - especially a problem in Shadows of Time. There is no apparent spacial separation of the chamber orchestra from the large orchestra in the symphony. It's all just mediocre, and this music is so much more thrilling and beautiful if played at a higher level. Simply put, save your money and buy a more competent recording. Metaboles - Tortelier (Szell is expensive, but worth it if you love this piece). Shadows of Time - Ozawa. Symphony #2 - Plasson or Tortelier."
