Synopsis

Album Description

Dolorosa is a journey of sound and mind. Pop imagery abounds in songs like "Change Your Mind", while power-pop hooks fill it up in tunes like "Shady Mess" and "Lowly Creatures". The band's spacier side shines through in cuts like "Queen of Centerville" and the psychedelic anthem "In Time". Meanwhile, the band's plaintive and spiritual side are evident in "Diabolical Scheme" and "Seeing Me". The record was produced by Keith Cleversley (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Spiritualized, Hum), Chris Colbert (Morella's Forest, Pave The Rocket) and Troy Daugherty. The influences of all these bands is evident even as Duraluxe creates original and important music.

"With the sweet, hypnotic vocals of Troy Daugherty and the wonderfully beautiful feedback that flows from Chris Colbert's wall of noise guitars, Duraluxe dominates the music world with Dolorosa...I've told my friends...have you? This album must be owned by anyone with a lust for quality songwriting and blistering guitars..."

"I saw these guys play a big festival in Nashville over the Valentine's Day holiday and they totally blew me away! A perfect mix of pop, psychedelia, noise, and wholesome goodness. With sounds that are comparable to all sorts of bands, from Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev to Galaxie 500 and Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, etc. A really, really solid debut CD! Upbeat pop numbers, rockers, sad simple songs with acoustic guitar- its all there! Yumm."

"Duraluxe's Dolorosa recalls a number of my favorite artists at their best. "Change Your Mind" is a distant cousin to the Pavement tune "Father to a Sister of Thought", itself a product of recording in Nashville. "Diabolical Scheme" (tongue planted firmly in cheek for this one's title) has a coda as beautiful as Lou Reed's lamenting fade-out "you'll only reap just what you sow" on "Perfect Day". However, the albums anchor, to me, must be the anthemic "Queen of Centreville" with haunting feedback introducing the choruses and fine bass sliding licks from the group's bassist, Tommy Wedge. A hodgepodge of influences result in something truly original."
