A Pleasure Worth Any Price
Lee Armstrong | Winterville, NC United States | 11/07/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Dulcie Taylor's third CD continues the excellent pace set by her second set, "Diamond & Glass." "Mirrors & Windows" is a varied set with literate lyrics and moving melodies. While her musical style is quite different, her vocal quality is a kissing cousin to Jackie DeShannon's. The opener, "Blackberry Winter," is a stunning track co-written with John Landau with a churning Byrds-like electric guitar, "You & I are caught in some trouble, feels like we're running for our lives, If we don't stand up & face it together, we can kiss our love goodbye." "Maybe" is also an excellent track with Michael Bellar's B3 Hammond organ playing under Dulcie's stunning vocal and her excellent melody, "I'd wake up tomorrow & do it all again, even if I knew I would lose in the end, sometimes the pleasure is worth any pain, worth any price." I also really like the rocker, "Pillow Like Stone" with its driving beat and the lyric tale of a love triangle, "You lay down in your bed & pray for sleep & you ask the Lord to take from you your need, your burning desire for her & her alone, but your pillow feels like stone." The other tracks on the CD are mellow folk-pop & are equally strong. "Miracle" has an impassioned vocal, "Everybody's looking for a miracle, everybody's trying to catch a dream." "Mirrors & Windows" is an excellent set! Enjoy!"
