CD Reviews

Dubravka Tomsic enters the pantheon of legendary pianists.

"With her astounding performance of the Liszt B minor Sonata, exhibiting complete mastery of the piano like few others have, Dubravka Tomsic enters the hallowed realm of the greatest pianistic geniuses--Horowitz, Hoffman, Rubinstein. Having heard her recently play most of these pieces live, I approached this recording with trepidation, fearing no recording could capture the sheer power fused with intelligence and romantic delicacy that Ms. Tomsic displayed in public. After the haze of the recital faded, I listened to the recording, and was in no way disappointed. She must be compared to the great conductors in the way she has completely digested and understood this enormous, lengthy piece and executes her conception with almost inhuman intricacy, poetry, strength and endurance. Surely inside this great artist beats the heart of a warrior. Frankly, before hearing Tomsic I was not enthralled with Liszt, but hearing her play the Sonata and the 1st Mephisto Waltz, I would now compare Liszt to Wagner and the other 19th century Germanic greats. His music is more than mere virtuosic effects. There is great depth, mystery and architecture behind his greatest pieces. Granted, a couple of the selections on this album are dismissable, but for the Sonata and the Waltz alone, you MUST purchase this album. Five stars do not suffice!!"
Stunning

"No one marries technical ability with romantic feeling as Tomsic does. Do not miss any recording let alone one as stunning as this one is. Liszt and Chopin have found their maestra -- she is beyond compare in her management of the technically difficult pieces that require emotional commitment. The recording is crisp and clean with none of the reverb that sometimes afflicts piano fortissimo. If you are not familiar with Tomsic, jump in with both feet -- she's a great discovery."
Divine

"I love Liszt, and this recording by Ms. Tomsic is divine (as was her performance in New York City). Do not buy another Liszt before you hear this artist. Ms. Tomsic is the best pianist alive."
