+ 1/2 stars...The Dubliners From Their Mid-60s Peak
Steve Vrana | Aurora, NE | 11/13/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Dubliners are the antithesis of the clean-cut image of such popular Irish bands as the Chieftains and the Clancy Brothers. These were hard-drinking Irishmen who add a grittier edge to their music. The 42 tracks on this collection are all taken from the handful of albums and EP's they recorded for Transatlantic in the mid-Sixties, beginning with their debut from 1964: THE DUBLINERS AND LUKE KELLY. Many of the selections are live, including all of the tracks from 1965's THE DUBLINER'S LIVE IN CONCERT.If you love Irish music and your collection doesn't include anything by this influential band, this a great place to start. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"
So much original material, and yet so much space left...

""The Transatlantic Anthology" features the first three albums by The Dubliners recorded in front of live audiences in London and Dublin. (Note: Luke Kelly was absent from the second, "In Concert", being replaced by Bob Lynch and John Sheahan). CD 1 is also featured on "Complete Dubliners", which also features stuff from their latest albums from the late 80s to the 90s. Sadly, it does exclude songs from "The Dubliners" and "Finnegan Wakes", not to mention "In Concert", in which all songs are featured here. It also features EP- and single tracks that did not make it on to the albums, like "The Foggy Dew", "Rare Old Mountain Dew", and "Off To Dublin In The Green".This is THE compilation for those who are interested in what they actually sounded like when they first started. One would be quite amazed to hear Luke Kelly tearing up a song by its chords and not failing to wear it out and Ronnie Drew displays his raspy, growling voice. You should not miss out on this one. Watch out for the instrumentals, in which Barney McKenna plays a big role in handling the main tones while the others jam along behind him. John Sheahan's virtuosity comes into the spotlight in "The Sunshine Hornpipe/Mountain Road". And one should not miss out on Luke Kelly's recitation of Louis MacNeice's poem "Dublin" used as a "preface to a song that we sing about Nelson".Nevertheless, this is an outstanding compilation, garnering the best of the beast of The Dubliners' early material. This is quite an Irish folk music treat!"
