CD Reviews

Fast, Smart, and Original

"I got this LP at a DIY show in Athens, GA and have consistently listened to it on a weekly basis since. The sound alternates between thrashy and poppy but not a single song dissapoints. The instrumentation is tight and the lyrics are intelligent and often nicely screamy. Fans of anarcho, folk-punk, and DIY pop punk should enjoy this record thoroughly."

"Ivy and I were talking last night, and we came to the conclusion that the Drunken Boats* hit the nail on the head with this album. The lyrics are heartfelt and sincere, switching between political and personal themes. They have an anthemic quality about them: at any given moment there is more than one person singing, screaming, or hollering. The songs are put together well, as they switch from sometimes poppy, straight ahead, or driving songs. In most cases they switch from poppy, to straight ahead, to driving all in the course of the song, leaving the songs refreshing, without the predictable repetition that most pop punk bands are hampered with. The music has a total early 90's East Bay feel to them without being generic or a ripoff of the glory days of pop punk. If I had to compare them to anyone, I would say they sound like the missing link between Crimpshrine and American Steel. I recently saw them play Fest. Now, there were some amazing bands there (The Bomb, Riverboat Gamblers, and Bossy, to name a few) but I can easily say that the Drunken Boats were the best band I saw all weekend. The passion for their music oozes out, and you can tell that every word they scream and every chord they strike on the album is based on sincerity and the love of what they are doing. In short, this album is amazing. I can gush on it all day! To me, this is one of the best albums of the year which is no easy task nor is it an easy copout statement especially considering how many amazing albums came out this year, like the A Death in the Family and Lawrence Arms albums.
