Donald Watkins career in gospel music began at the early age of 5 singing with Sis Lucille Johnson. He later was one of the original organizing members of Bobby Jones & New Life Singers. He was instrumental in the organization of the Fisk Gospel Choir and served a long stint as Nashville Chapter Representative for Gospel Music Workshop of America. In the late 1980's and early 90's Donald Watkins was one of the premier gospel music artist in the world after having recorded with GOSPEARL Records the hit album "He Got Up" and his sophomore project "When Jesus Comes For Me." He was tapped by the Benson Group to head the Black Gospel Music Division to which he with the help of Gentry McCreary , Butch McGhee signed Richard Smallwood and the Smallwood Singers, Thomas Whitfield, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Don Degrate Delegation, & Keith Pringle. At the height of his career seemingly God put up a huge stop sign when his beloved mother became ill. Torn between career & love for mother in his inner spirit Donald heard the voice of the Lord say "Son behold thy mother" immediately without thought or concern for himself he dropped totally off the gospel music scène and returned to Louisville to care for his mother until her recent passing. Throughout the 10 year period of leaving the Gospel Music Industry Donald has stayed with God. Following the leadership of his pastor Bishop Steven Kelsey he has always hoped to one day return to the studio and stage to record & to reach souls for Christ. Bishop Kelsey has often told him "An answer delayed is not an answer denied.
