"Ron's two-star review couldn't be further off the mark. It's the ballads that are the stunning highlights of this album as well as Don's Mercury label follow-up 'Hot Blood.'
'I Was Checkin' Out She Was Checkin' In' is one of the all-time classic cheatin' soul songs. How many people thought it was the Rolling Stones hitting an unexpected high when they first heard this on the radio? (Mick Jagger owes an unpayable debt to Don Covay for usurping his vocal sound and style). 'Leave Him' simmers for eight wonderful minutes, but it has to be 'Somebody's Been Enjoying My Home' that floors the Soul pathos-o-meter into the red... Don itemizes all the evidence of another man in his abode culminating with, "He even had the nerve to rob my Frigidaire. What made me so mad he drank my last six-pack of beer. Lord!"
A great album. And the funky stuff is pretty good too."
