CD Reviews

The original Mr. Soul
Ed Stofko | Dallas, TX | 05/18/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is as smooth as silk and gritty at the sama time. "The Red Coomb Song" is R'n'B at it's finest and "Victims" is pure social conscienous (sic) a la Curtis Mayfield. "Hall of Fame" would be a total pleasure if it weren't for the lame trying-to-be hip/with-it intro by Paul Shaffer (Paul that shtick only works when your playing Ed McMahon to Letterman's Carson). The worst song on the CD is "Poontang" a nice groove but stupid lyrics. It's a pity this disc did not have better marketing behind it. It could have been a strong contender in 2000."

"Don Covay proves with this album just how many fellow soulmen(and women)have recorded his great songs. He has done some great recordings himself-and this album is definitely a highlight of his recording career, with so many great artists featured on it."
