CD Reviews

Very fine!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is idiotic to try to categorize the music of Todd Christoffel and his group don't ask. That comment is a double-edge sword: It is both a profound compliment to a group of fellows very talented and original, but, as this writer knows all too well, it is a comment that recognizes that in this culture originality and talent do not neccessarily give you lots of well deserved recognition or air time. And that is both unjust and sad-- because There's a Monkey in my Grape is simply this: very fine. If I had to choose the songs I most enjoy, it's quite a challenge because they are all good in different ways: from thesong of adventure and delight in Highway's End to the bite of For Yugoslavia and Can it Be-- from the pain of Murder in Nashville to yhe wonderful ballad of Rose in the Shadow-- all I can say is that I look forward to listening to the CD again and again and have only one question for Mr. Christoffel and Don't Ask--when's your next one coming out? Bruce Taylor (Mr. Magic Realism)author, the Final Trick of Funnyman and Other Stories: Ministry of Whimsey Press, 1997."

"Don't Ask
There's a Monkey in My Grape
#DA52355, Wily Wombat Wecords
One of the bands that can be found on [URL]
these days is Washington's own Don't Ask. Comprised
of Todd Christoffel, who writes most of the goup's
material, Crispin Faget, guitar, and Doug Aslin, drums,
with There's a Monkey in My Grape, Don't Ask offers a
mix of acoustic and electric pop. Christoffel is a
poweful and thoughtful lyricist, who creates vivid
images, as can be found in tunes like "Highway's
End":"In the cool sunshine,just a dream away,just
around the bend, as the clouds drift past, down the
highway." Faget offers some fine tunes as well,
particularly his tale of the passing of childhood, and
the trials of adulthood, "Can it be?" Aslin's
percussion provides just the right amount of rhythm
behind Faget's guitar. Founding members Christoffel
and Faget have been playing together since theirlate
1980s and it shows. Together, thei voices blend as
though they were brothers. There's a Monkey in My
Grape is an album that is fun, well produced, and
shows the talents of these fine musicians. Great
stuff! (Allen Price)"
Great Find!

"With the name, "Don't Ask" & the CD title, "There's a Monkey in my Grape," can one expect anything less than clever original music? Until this album, there was not a lot of good music around about catching wombats (wily Australian marsupials)! The opening guitar in "The Wombat" sounds like the lead to a beautiful love song & then unexpectedly leads you into this totally silly & irreverent song, complete with wombat noises. Also irreverent is "Texas Barbecue" about the Waco disaster. Both tunes are catchy, sing along songs, sung by Todd Christoffel, who has an excellent, professional quality voice. Consistent throughout the album is the beautiful, talented guitar playing of Todd Christoffel & Crispin Faget. I also like the percussion of Doug Aslin, especially on "Life of a Distant Fire." My favorite song on the album is "For Yugoslavia", a beautiful song of peace with quality guitar & a catchy tune that deserves to be heard well beyond greater Seattle. When this review was written, this CD was ranked 190,499! The only reason it was ranked that low is because "Don't Ask" is primarily known as a local Seattle band. If you can't get to the Seattle area to hear this band, or even if you can, this album is a great find!"
