Synopsis

Album Description
"There is no doubt that Lester is a player who is technically well on top of these demanding works. His playing is neat, crisp and controlled ... and he is well able to generate excitement from Scarlatti's adventurous keyboard textures." -- Gramophone "A bold approach and musical perception ... a player who can see compositions in the round and has the assured technique to realize well-founded performances." -- Daily Telegraph The final volume in a brand-new series of seven volumes of the complete keyboard sonatas of Scarlatti, with appendices and recent discoveries, plus six continuo sonatas. This three-CD set includes a wide array of miscellaneous sonatas, most played on harpsichord, with some on fortepiano. Also contains an extended essay on the sonatas written by Richard Lester. The complete collection, issued to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Scarlatti's death, comprises thirty-eight CDs. Richard Lester is founder and artistic director of the Cirencester Early Music Festival, an annual event designed to promote excellence in the performance of Early Music. These recordings use the critical edition of the works completed in the early 1980s by Kenneth Gilbert.
