This is an excellent goulash from New York's Lincoln Center, featuring the three greatest Hungarian composers of the 20th century. Longest and most substantial is the Bartók sonata, one of his masterpieces and here given one of its more colorful performances. The rhythms really snap and the percussionists are as adept as the pianists. Dohnányi's Serenadeis a sweet, late Romantic piece, while Kodály's is about halfway between the other two. With its contrasts in instrumentation and style, this disc makes for a well thought out listening program, just like a concert by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. --Leslie Gerber
