CD Reviews

A brilliant set...
D. Cochran | Columbus, Ohio | 12/29/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you're a fan of Django, or of "Gypsy Jazz", this four disc set will happily find a place in your collection. It contains a great mix of vocal and instrumental tracks, jazz standards, traditional swings and rags and a few other rare gems. The session musicians are masters in their own right. Django shares the studio with some highly underrated and rarely mentioned musicians as well as some big names like Coleman Hawkins and his longtime collaborator Stephane Grapelli...the tracks with Freddy Taylor on vocals are particularly memorable. I bought this set a couple days ago and have already gone through all of the discs at least once. It's a winner for fans of the genre, as well as those who are unfamiliar with Django's work and are looking for a place to start. The overall sound quality is very good, which is a risk you take buying these older session recordings. Some of them are in such great need of being restored that the music can barely be heard, while some have an oversanitized "too clean" digital feel to them. This set walks the fine line between the two by preserving much of the warmth of an original analog recording. 5 out of 5 for content, and 4.5 out of 5 for sound quality."
