"She Lay Gutted being released in Disgorges early career, I was expecting more emphasis on brutality and less attention to technicality because it's normal of brutal and progressive DM bands to become more technical over their careers. After the first song, I became excited on my first listen because my assumption was off base because even though Consume the Forsaken and Parallels of Infinite Torture are more technical, this album shows excellent musicianship; the machine like technicality characteristic of brutal DM. It's clear Disgorge was establishing their music writing with this album, which by the next, was fully established. The guitars rely on grooves more than future albums, which connect the main themes, consisting of palm-muted chords and the scale runs and melodies that make up the development sections. The grooves create a smooth setting, which emphasizes the brutality of the chord progressions and the daring speed of the scales and runs. This album also contains some of the fastest riffs I've heard from Disgorge. These riffs happen at the blink of an eye in a series of abrupt tempo changes following and leading into the main themes and development sections. Despite the band not being fully established in their music writing, every musician is on top of their game individually.
