CD Reviews

Absolute classic!

"here we go, i've been waiting three years for relapse to finally get this thing set up, and i'm glad i was able to stay alive long enough to gain a copy. here we have their unbelievable full length 'transcendence into the peripheral,' and their two demos 'dusk,' and 'mourning september.'

of course the full length is what you need to hear. sixty minutes of some of the most hypnotic doom metal ever created. it is rather difficult to describe. disembowelment's avant garde approach to metal includes grinding blasty portions, old school death metal shredding, atmospheric ambient soundscapism, and of course the slow doom metal riffage that eventualy came to be known as funeral doom. vocals are very abrasive and distant here. also the lyrics are totaly weird.

though not all of the songs hold all of these styles, some do, such as my favorite cut 'your prophetic throne of ivory,' starting with an ambient drone, moving into a slow doomy riff, into a very atmospheric yet heavy clean and distorted guitar sequence, then into blasting death metal, and finally slowing down to pure doom again to close. if you get my drift, there aren't any verse corus styled songs here. though some, such as excoriate and nightside of eden are rather short and simple, and a burial at ornans is total black and distorted, lacking the atmosphere of some of the other tracks. to that avail, i really don't think the tracks sound that alike, because on the tracks featuring clean guitar there is a very surreal contrasting feel, and on the songs without that contrast, a blacker feeling prevails.

the production here is strange, but i think it is some of the most fitting i have ever heard. the clean guitar sound is impossible to describe and ultimately incredible, the distorted guitars are thick and dirty, and the reverbed screams are some of the most memorable i have heard. as far as atmospherics are conserned, this is one of the most unorthodox i have heard in metal, and one of my favorites.

now to the demos. the bonus disc contains a full 56 minutes of material, though all of the dusk demo was re-recorded on the full length. the versions on dusk are more raw and generally faster, especially a burial at ornans, which is the slowest on the full length. the production is not the strange and intresting one found on the full length, and the speed changes the band employs do create a problem in making a clear record. i do enjoy listening to these versions though. the mourning september demo is very rough. it is a bit difficult to listen to, but i like it a lot, especially thou messiah and the outro. in fact the outro is one of the best songs they ever did, so don't miss it. while most of the demo tracks don't reach the unorthodox feel of the full length its still better than most death metal.

over all if you like dark, deep doom metal you must own this album. this record is sometimes unsung, and was very influential, but just remember, this is raw strange stuff, and it isn't skepticism either, disembowelment could really shred when they wanted to. so get this if you enjoy evoken, esoteric, winter, my dying bride's first album, early katatonia, even autopy."
