CD Reviews

Holds up Remarkably

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm shocked how much I like this CD. When these songs were popular and I was much younger I was no fan of the pop music of Burt Bacharach, and I dismissed Dionne Warwick as just commercial and forgettable.

A few weeks ago I heard a singer on American Idol (yeah please don't hold it against me that I find that show entertaining) do "Anyone who had a Heart" and I did not remember the song but thought it was gorgeous so I bought this album. Wow! Dionne Warwick has a fabulous voice and could really sing. Many of these songs belong in the catalog of great american standards. The arrangements, while clearly of their time, still sound interesting and engaging. If you are looking for rock or soul in the classic sense you won't find it here. If you like pop standards, and perhaps even jazz vocals, you'll probably be surprised to be reminded what a great vocalist Dionne Warwick was in her prime and how many gems were written by Burt Bacharach."
