CD ReviewsWarwick does it right barry | Boston, MA United States | 08/04/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "Dionne Warwick has been around so long and faced so many decades without ever sacrificing her strength and emotive ability as a vocalist. A class act she is indeed. This cd is two albums from the 80s and interestingly the order is wrong. FRIENDS IN LOVE was released in 1982 and HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE SAY GOODBYE was released in 1983 with the album HEARTBREAKER in between. Only the album HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE SAY GOODBYE was produced by Luther Vandross. FRIENDS IN LOVE was produced by Jay Graydon. There are some superb Warwick performances here. I was in my early 20s when these were released and at that time the Vandross album was my favorite and now that has changed. GOT A DATE and I DO IT CAUSE I LIKE IT are filler ultra pop tracks that are very dated. They are silly and fun if you are a huge fan but for your average listener they are a miss. But the rest of that album is superb with Warwick and Vandross doing a sublime duet on the title track. Other standouts are her interpretations of SO AMAZING, WHAT CAN A MIRACLE DO and I CAN LET GO NOW. Her raspy vocals rap themselves around each lush note and Vandross's arrangements are the perfect match. Magic is made with these songs but nothing can match her heart wrenching reflective reading of WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW. She is joined by the Shirelles here and it is the best song on the album. FRIENDS IN LOVE is r@b/adult contemporary all the way and each song shows Warwick at her best. She tackles each song with pure emotion and superb vocals. Standouts are WHAT IS THIS, BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW, WITH A TOUCH, A LOVE SO RIGHT and FRIENDS IN LOVE a duet with Johny Mathis.
