CD Reviews

Outstanding!

"I bought this Act 1 Walkure because Klemperer was conducting. This disc is really good, and the stereo sound is fantastic! The weight Klemp brings to the score is really something else. In the booklet, it explains that he was scheduled to record the full opera but, he was late in his years and couldn't complete it. He also chose to have young singers, fresh in their voices and careers, to give to the interpretation something new and lively, which they do very well. The opening and closing of Die Walkure couldn't be done better in their overall structural arch. Full text and translations are included with extensive liner notes explaining many things about the great Otto Klemperer and the history of this recording.
Thanks TESTAMENT."

"Klemperer recorded not only Act I of Walkure but also the concluding part of Act III some months later. The maestro, the Philharmonia and Norman Bailey create something remarkable in that scene which is sadly ommitted on this disc. Still, the CD has the whole of Act I, amply demonstrating the glorious detail and depictive powers of Klemperer's conducting. The speeds are slower than usual but the atmosphere is electrifying and Dernesch and Cochran overwhelm in the closing scene."
