Nostalgic Christmas At It's Best
rodney wiltin | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | 12/21/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Two things are amazing with DICK HAYMES!

1) That this christmas cd is, as of this writing, discontinued.

2) That DICK HAYMES, to my knowledge, never recorded an actual christmas album in one session (perhaps spread over a couple of days). This is such a crazy thing it might be considered criminal!

What DICK HAYMES has done is record several christmas songs individually throughout the years and this cd is a compilation of them. The songs seem to all be from the 1940's to the early 1950's and so they carry that very old 'nostalgic' christmas sound to them reminding one of the old christmas recordings of BING CROSBY, PERRY COMO, and FRANK SINATRA. And believe me, DICK HAYMES is as ever great a singer as these three gentlemen who gave us some of our best christmas music. That's why I find it so wrong that DICK HAYMES never recorded a christmas album in one session like the others did. It boggles the mind.

Every song is great here and as DICK HAYMES sings them as great or greater than anybody, in general, at least. There are several different backing orchestra's and chorus' on this cd since the songs are from scattered recordings throughout the years. But everything compliments DICK HAYMES tot he finest.

LET IT SNOW and the two versions of WHITE CHRISTMAS are standouts here as are I'VE GOT MY LOVE TO KEEP ME WARM and IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR. However, I could really name every song because they are just that good.

If you're looking for that old nostalgic christmas sound for the holidays, this is a perfect cd to get and it receives my fullest recommendation."
