Synopsis

Beethoven's Diabelli Variations is a great intellectual and emotional journey, and not every pianist is equipped to make it. Inspired by the simple quality of the music publisher's simple waltz, Beethoven wrote a nearly hour-long piece that simultaneously explores the nature of musical harmony and the depths of feeling he could evoke. When you read the pianist's detailed program notes, he sounds as though he is mainly interested in the intellectual aspects of the music. But his playing is deeply emotional, technically strong, and very satisfying. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

A Definitive Performance of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations
John Kwok | New York, NY USA | 10/03/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Until I heard this recording, I didn't realize that noted Beethoven scholar William Kinderman is also a fine interpreter of his music. Kinderman's encyclopedic liner notes can be found in the Philips box set of Alfred Brendel's latest Beethoven piano sonata cycle. Like Brendel, Kinderman is an introspective pianist, playing with much warmth and grace. Kinderman's performance of the Diabelli Variations is among the finest I have heard; I believe it is listed in Grammophone's and Penguin's Classical Music CD guides as among the definitive recordings. It is a riveting, emotional satisfying account of one of Beethoven's most difficult works for the piano."

"The only thing I can add to the previous review is that Hyperion is reissuing this recording on it's Helios label, which will keep one of the great recordings of the Diabelli Variations in the Classical Catalogue for a bit longer I also recommend his recording of the last Three Piano Sonatas 30-32 also on the Helios label."
