CD Reviews

SIMPLY GREAT ROCKABILLY MUSIC
John Belville | 03/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you've never turned on to the DiMaggio Brothers, you've missed the boat. These boys rock out with a flavor of early 50s rock and roll. They've studied the 'roots' of R&R and have mastered the 'feel' of the music. Buy this one and you'll not be disappointed..."

"WOW ! This has to be the best rockabilly set I have heard from anyone since the 50s, when Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Johnny Burnette and a young Elvis Presley were really "tearing it up ".This trio hails, according to the CD notes, from Florence, Italy.
They sound as if they come from Memphis, Tennessee ! Their vocals are excellent, whether it's solo, or harmony. Elvis casts a long shadow, but these guys tackle "King Creole", " Let Me" and " I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine " very well indeed. They perform Mark Knopfler's "Walk of Life " as a great closer, but a real revelation is the huge Police hit, " Every Breath You Take ", done rockabilly style--original and exciting. I should add that the trio's original numbers are terrific too--there is not a sub-par track on the whole disc.Instrumentally, this trio really shines--slappin' bass, rhythm guitar, and one of the best rockabilly lead guitars I have ever heard--Scotty Moore, Cliff Gallup, James Burton--Marco Di Maggio has obviously heard all the great pickers, and become one himself. Other, more recent rockabilly " axe-men " like Dave Edmunds, Brian Setzer, Albert Lee, even the great Jeff Beck, should check this guy out ! Just listen to the blistering instrumental, " High Speed Pickin' "--Marco is a knockout !This is easily one of the most exciting discs I have heard in a long time. If your taste in music runs to rockabilly, or good old rock and roll, push the "buy immediately" button. You won't be sorry."
