Featuring the Best of Dexter Gordon
groovejazzfm | San Antonio, TX United States | 02/17/2003

"Features excellent examples of Dexter's superb playing such as "The Moontrane" and "Red Top." An album that features an eleven piece all-star ensemble that featured such stalwart players as Bobby Hutcherson, Benny Bailey, and Frank Wess playing Slide Hampton's full-bodied arrangements. Dexter's solo on "The Moontrane" showed him to be unawed by the Woody Shaw tune's post bebop chord changes. As his one time producer Michael Cuscuna once noted, "Of all the people of his generation, Dexter...(had always stayed young)" He influenced Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane and then, when they surpassed him, he learned from them still learning and growing until his death. He was inspired by Lester Young, Billie Holiday, the Duke, Jimmy Lunsford and Roy Eldridge. He was quoted as saying, "Bebop is the music of the future." I once saw him perform back in the late 70's. He was inspiring, in my book the greatest tenor player ever and a he had a way with ballads that was unsurpassed."

"With Sophisticated Giant,we are in front of one of the finest works on jazz music.Starting with a beatifull version of Laura, this album is and example of very good arragements,(Slide Hampton's) and also of Dexter's remarkable talend when building his solos.Melodies are not only lovely, but well treated too.Up-tempos tunes keep the spirit of the whole album while swinging, and that spirit is an spirit of real jazz music. This album is A MUST on any jazz music collection."

"...mr. gordon gives us a deep, bluesy album with this one...makes you sit back and reminisce about past loves and what you gonna do to get that next one...
somethin to fall asleep on or to swoon someone equally sophisticated as what you hope you are (and then fall asleep!)...this is the way grown folks are spose to chill...like we was meant to..."
