CD Reviews

An Absolute Essential from the Crown Prince!
Matthew Channon | Sandy, Utah USA | 03/16/2005

"I never appreciated Dennis Brown as much as critics and reviewers seem to think I should. I bought a couple of his CDs that I thought were safe and agreed that he had his talented moments but I still couldn't understand what the big deal was. And with a semmingly endless amount of albums to sift through I decided to stay away from this artist for a while...and for too long!

And then somehow I stumbled across the "Complete A&M Years" looking through the Amazon website for some Reggae to buy. I listened to the first five intros and ordered it immediately. I didn't even know it was a 2-disc set at first. I just liked what I heard and because it was the "complete" A&M years I needn't fear that there would be a better set covering this same period. So I took what I considered to be a smart chance.

It turned out to be a wise investment. Not only was I surprised to learn there were 2 discs but after hearing both all the way through I was stunned at how amazing these songs were. Never had I heard Reggae music transcend the American mainstream so well without compromising its heart and soul (not since Bob Marley). Many have tried and failed but Dennis Brown combines Reggae with something completely alien (American contemporary) and it still manages to be the real thing...well, except for tracks 6-10 on disc 2 which are completely funk with no hint of Reggae at all. Experiments maybe, but we are releived again with the last five songs which continue the style originally established. And five annoying tracks out of thirty is no huge sacrifice.

I can't stress how crucial I think this set is, not only for Dennis Brown fans but especially for anyone looking for a place to begin investigating one of the most prolific and enduring artists in Reggae. If you haven't heard much from the man known as the "Crown Prince of Reggae," get this! It's a great deal and one of the best collections I've heard for a while. I, for one, will definitely be buying more music from the amazing Mr. Brown very soon."
