BRAND NEW, SECOND HAND VINTAGE

"HUMAN RIGHTS & JUSTICE: Oh my gosh! This is an absolute stunner from the son of the legendary - and very distinctive - Leo Graham, who recorded several crucial sides for Lee Perry and Joe Gibbs back in the 1970s. Blessed with a rumbling, grumbling baritone voice not unlike that of Peter Tosh, or Burning Spear, or even the rather less celebrated Nitty Gritty, Daweh Congo is a gifted songwriter who, with at least four full-length releases under his belt, is deserving of wider recognition. The beauty of HUMAN RIGHTS & JUSTICE is in the combination of the singer's conscious, intellectual lyricism, and the vintage Roots Radics rhythms that dominate the soundtrack. In fact, these are the original rhythms, mostly recorded at Channel One in the early 1980s, not contemporary remakes. As such, we're treated to the snap and crackle of the Roots Radics at their powerful, muscular best, matched step for step by Daweh Congo's deeply dread, Spear-like chanting style. There's not a weak effort in sight here, but I would have to nominate the outstanding HERB TREE - a clever vignette about, well, you know what, set to the rhythm of Yellowman's classic, ZUNGGUZUNGGUGUZUNGGUZENG! - as my favourite tune, closely followed by the likes of JAH IS MY SHEPHERD and EARTH RUNNING. As I said, though, it's all about as good as reggae gets, and if you sleep on this one, you might as well sleep for the next thousand years. Really, it's not to be missed.

You should also seek out Daweh Congo's other releases to date. They include: MILITANCY, GUIDANCE, JAH CHILDREN, and HEALTH & STRENGTH and they all come just as highly recommended.
