Synopsis

Product Description
Every artist has a relationship to tradition. Very few artists distill their reactions to that heritage into a single work of art: what they learned, what they found true and what false, their admiration and sympathy as well as their disagreement or frank rejection. In Conversaciones, David Rosenmann-Taub achieves this in the most direct way: by speaking person to person, via the piano, with some of the greatest composers of the classical tradition. The composer adopts the language of his interlocutors western, tonal music but only as one resource among many, to be used when it serves to communicate his meaning. Music, for Rosenmann-Taub, is meant to convey a concrete experience: harmony and dissonance, tonality and atonality are not employed for their own sake, but for expressive effect. Elements of the waltz, the fugue, or twelve-tone composition make an appearance and, having served their purpose, disappear just as quickly. There are no rigid forms here, no decorative ornamentation; each piece has its own shape and physiognomy, which unfold naturally, like that of an organic, living being. This freedom of expression explains the freshness of Rosenmann-Taub s music, and helps one to understand the reaction of his teacher, the great Chilean composer Pedro Humberto Allende, on hearing Conversaciones for the first time. Though Allende was surprised by the work s departure from convention, when asked for suggestions and improvements, he insisted: Don t change a single note!
