CD Reviews

Again close to the originals (and again maybe even better)..

"After finding David Myers' "Plays Genesis" CD on Amazon, I wanted to find out if he had done any more recordings, not just of Genesis songs but just in general. To my great surprise and delight, I came across this album in the MP3 section.

All of the hallmarks of Myers' previous album are again present here: great interpretation, stunning piano talent, fantastic reworking of guitar parts. In addition to these qualities, Myers adds another with this album - choice of material. After a few listens to his first album, it suddenly dawned on me "Trick of The Tail" had not been included. How could anyone do an album of Genesis covers on the piano and not include that?! Thankfully, that omission has been corrected here. "Mad Man Moon" has also been included, and the performance is breathtaking. It gives this collection a dazzling finale that closely rivals that of "Cinema Show" on the first album.

Another surprise selection is "Scenes From A Night's Dream." I had long forgotten this track until the release of the surround sound boxsets brought it strikingly back into focus. The performance here is just wonderful, sounding almost like something out of ragtime music. Another treat was "Burning Rope," which leaps right out to start the album with an almost majestic quality in this recording that is a joy to listen to.

As with his first album, Myers again limits himself to songs from the 1970s. While I personally find this leaves a little something to be desired, it's a minor fault that is easily forgiven once the album begins. Still, couldn't we perhaps dip into the 1980s for a rendering of "Duchess" next time?

Genesis fans would again do well to pick up this album too. Myers' skill and interpretation are not to be missed."
