CD Reviews

One of my all time favorite records...
J. Ravasio | Philadelphia | 07/30/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"David Karsten Daniels is one of the most talented and creative artists that I have come across in a long time. I got a demo version of this record while passing through N. Carolina with a touring band. We got set up through a friend to stay with David for a night. Super nice guy and at some point in the night casually mentioned that he was signed to Fatcat Records recently. When he gave us a demo version of Sharp Teeth as we left I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm pretty sure that after we put it on in the van, the entire band was silent with their jaws dropped until the CD was over.

That was a few years ago...my obsession with DKD has continued and I am really confused as to why at this point (with two releases on Fatcat under his belt) David Karsten Daniels hasn't become a household name among fans of...ANY genre of indie music. This record, to me, is perfect from beginning to end. The songs have a real atmospheric quality to them without being ambient or rambling. It is rare these days to be able to put on a record, close your eyes, and really be taken to another place in your mind. I can do that with this album. I would say that fans of Iron and Wine, Will Oldham, Elliot Smith, etc. will be BLOWN away by this...

Standout tracks are The Dream Before The Ring That Woke Me, American Past Time and Jesus and the Devil.

All of the songs are incredibly arranged, layering gorgeous strings, crisp horns, and swirling vocals over the acoustic guitar/drums/bass/keys. But it never comes off as "too much". Listen to the first track (The Dream Before...) and you will know what I mean. Guaranteed you will have goosebumps by the end.

I can't say enough good things about David Karsten Daniels...this record especially. Check it out! There is NO way that you will be disappointed!"
