CD Reviews

Contemporary songs for Catholic worship / private prayer
Marc DelMonico | Washington, DC United States | 12/28/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"David Haas is well known among in Roman Catholic circles as one of the foremost composers of music for use in the Catholic liturgy today. He has a wonderful sense of the liturgy's rich tradition of music, and knows instinctively, it seems, how to create music that will make you want to sing "throughout all time." David does it again in this 1997 release. While there are many new songs on this CD, David also performs and conducts others in some favorites from the African-American tradition as well, including "Steal Away" which is done at a tempo and in a style that gives it its proper context as a powerful spiritual. "O'er the River Jordan," is another piece that uses multiple voices to compliment each other well. "On that Day," a rousing song performed by soloist Kate Cuddy is a fantastic example of a fast-paced song that can get people singing! Others on this CD, including the title piece are prayerful and meditative settings of a number of the Psalms. "This Child of Ours," is a beautiful song to commemorate a baptism," and "Blessed Are Those Who Mourn," is a reminder of hope for those who have lost loved ones in death. "Song of the Lord's Command" is a perfect meditation on Jesus washing the disciple's feet at the last supper, and "Here Am I" has haunting lyrics that remind us of God's never ceasing call to be present to those suffering from injustice. All in all, a variety of styles that is sure to please anyone who loves Haas' music or is looking for music that is good prayer, public or private."
