This CD contains recordings of a live acoustic piano recital January 6, 1996 at the 1st Congregational Church of Berkeley, on a Hamburg C Steinway, composed and performed by David Erskine. Some of the pieces are reminiscent of the 19th century romantic composers such as Chopin, with an influence of impressionism. They are expressive, heartfelt and sometimes dramatic, often harplike with inventive melodies. These engaging compositions are performed with the exuberance and energy that live recitals bring. Themes of nature inspire many of the compositions. An additional track from a previous release (Sierra Passage) describes the immense age and grandeur of the Sequoia tree and is accompanied in the booklet by a poem and drawing of the tree, also by the composer. The last two tracks are synthesized orchestrations inspired by the majesty of the Grand Canyon. The beautiful and abstract cover painting was created by Tim Lajoie.
