CD ReviewsSolid bluegrass! J. Ross | Roseburg, OR USA | 05/06/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "From the relatively new MasterShield label, we are treated to a wonderful introduction to David Coffey, a fine singer, songwriter and musician from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. While his name may not be that common in bluegrass circles, Coffey has been a professional musician since the age of 16, when he first started touring with a gospel quartet called "The Crestmen." After that, he was recruited to be in a band formed by Lew Dewitt, formerly of The Statler Brothers. Coffey recently formed his own band called Virginia Blend. Of the ten cuts on this album, David Coffey wrote six. Being a very adept multi-instrumentalist, he also provided all the instrumentation for it on guitar, mandolin, banjo, dobro and bass. The title cut, "Coffey Break," really allows this versatile musician to shine, as does his "Ode to Rodes," which I am assuming was written for Verna Rodes, President of MasterShield. We will be hearing much more about David Coffey, especially with the upcoming release of his project called "Refill," with a number of top Nashville musicians. My hat is off to this fairly new label for the fine Virginia products they are producing and promoting.
