Dave Sharp s Secret Seven is groove jazz mixed with latin rhythms and jazzfunk, inspired by The Meters, Galactic, and John Coltrane. The band features former Melvins bassist Dave Sharp and Chris Kaercher (The Temptations, O Jays, Four Tops, Aretha Franklin) on tenor saxophone. Their new CD, 7, (Vortex Jazz 1969) brings new energy to instrumental jazz, including original tunes like Africano (Afro-Beat), Skeleton Key (Rhumba) and Chrispy Underground (New Orleans Funk). Sharp was born and raised in Detroit, and became deeply devoted to the study of jazz as a student at the University of Michigan. He also studied in San Francisco with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis (McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderly, Les McCann). He served as bassist and composer for modern jazz ensemble Spheres of Influence, and touring bassist for seminal rock band The Melvins. Sharp lives in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he continues to compose, record, teach and perform.
