CD Reviews

Two gems more from the Dave Pell Octet
Jazzcat | Genoa, Italy Italy | 07/07/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dave's unit in the fifties was terrific. Here in this double cd package you can find some fabolous west coast jazz. If I were You, I wouldn't let this pass by. You know how it goes with these albums from the fifties, ... they come along and few months later they're out of print again. If you love West Coast Jazz, buy this thing now! Don't waste this opportunity to own some very special and hard to find music. I'm unbelievably happy Jazzcity (Fresh Sound) decided to buy the copyright for this stuff and to release it again. I'm talking about the two complete albums you will find here; "Jazz and Romantic Places" and "Love story with the Dave Pell Octet". These two albums have been out of print for decades and finally they are here again. This music is on the same level of "I had the craziest dream" and if you guys know Dave Pell's catalogue you know that the Dream is one of the best. Here we are on the same level. So no problems at all with this music. It is simply splendid West Coast jazz of the highest caliber! Buy it with confidence. The booklet is very nice, the package well done. The only thing I can't understand is why they put the covers of two more albums here, "The Les Brown All Stars" and "I had the craziest dream" while they are not complete at all. Why they decided to insert only a brief part of "I had the craziest dream" (be prepared, it is NOT the complete album, I own it and I did the comparison, ... here there are only 9 tunes out of 14), and only a couple tunes from "The Les Brown All Stars"? To fill the space of a double cd package? Didn't they learn in all these years of experience that Jazz collectors want to own the albums in their full form!?!??!?! Gosh, it's so easy to understand! This is the law, "IF YOU PRINT AN ALBUM OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE DO IT PROPERLY, REPRINT IT IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM AND WITH THE RIGHT ORIGINAL COVER". Easy isn't it?! Another thing, as you can imagine from what I have just said, is the original album cover and artwork. Here the covers from the original albums are reprinted but only in very small sizes ... a little bigger would have been better. But apart from these collector's manics (very important, Fresh Sound, take note), the music here is fantastic and these two complete albums have been really hard to find ,... so I won't complain too much with Fresh Sound. Splendid music for real."
