A Middle of the Road Sax Player
10/15/1998
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Musically, Koz seems to fit about halfway between Kenny G. and David Sanborn on this CD. He lacks the hard jazz edge of Sanborn, but avoids the lightweight fluff of Kenny. The result is a pleasing, if variable mix, of that "soft jazz sound".The interesting part, though, is that Koz himself seems to realize he's not a strong enough player to carry a whole instrumental album. The result is tunes like "Yesterday's Rain" and "Nothing But the Radio On", which features vocals and has Koz's excellent playing merely as background fodder -- very good background fodder, but fodder all the same.Still, this CD is a great one to relax to, especially in front of a nice fire with someone you would like to make your significant other. Then maybe you too can have "Nothing But The Radio On"..."

"Before recording this debut album, Dave played on albums by acts as disparate as Joan Armatrading, U2, Ray Charles, Donny Osmond, Richard Marx and Gladys Knight & The Pips. On this album he is supported by experts Jeff Lorber (keyboards), Buzz Feiten (guitar), Randy Jackson (bass) and Tom Scott (sax) plus vocal contributions from Cole Basque and Joey Diggs. Koz plays the sax with gusto and his scope includes the full spectrum of pop, jazz and R&B. There's no doubt he enjoys what he's doing - on the track Love Of My Life, for instance, the mix of funky beat and Ms Basque's piercing vocal creates an effect not unlike that of Prince or Michael Jackson. Very exuberant."
