Synopsis

From the first skyrocket notes of Dave Hole's slide guitar, the Australian's sixth album for Alligator Records is a sonic thrill ride. It helps that few musical sounds are as exciting as steel pipe on steel strings--especially since Hole's skills as a singer and songwriter don't match his incendiary musicianship. And Hole's got an edge over almost every other slide guitarist; when he was learning the technique as a teen, he broke his pinky and switched the slide to his left index finger, playing over the top of the fretboard. The greater strength and flexibility of that digit makes him sound like Elmore James on steroids, especially when he's copping James's "It Hurts Me Too" on "Outside Looking In." A surprising highlight is the star-crossed love ballad "Out of My Reach," where Hole sings a gentle melody on poignant lyrics supported by pretty, light arpeggios and saves his slide for a sweet slow solo break and fills. There's also the acoustic "Nobody," a low-key kiss-off that further proves Hole can be as gracefully unamplified as he can be thunderously cranked. Of course, the latter description fits the majority of this album's bracing, zingy performances. --Ted Drozdowski

"This sixth album of this "monster"of slide guitar makes me feel so better and happier than ever!!!Great return Hole. The other reviewer resumed in one word all of the intensity of this cd,and i agreed "TRIUMPHANT"!!!!!! When i've heard Outside Looking In,with the other interpretation to "It Hurts me too",i've tought you've done so right. It touch me inside my soul with rare feelings! This is an album to be heard for so long long many times... An album of a blues guitar man with his own way to play slide guitar, like only few men ever did with this competency!!! Great album Hole, and of course all of your fans at all of the corners in the world...they're happier than never!!! Thanks a LOT!!!!!"

"Six albums in and Australia's Dave Hole has yet to stumble. "Outside Looking In" continues the grand tradition established with the slide god's Alligator debut "Short Fuse Blues." Although Hole seems to fill every available space with steel on strings, it never gets tiresome. Employing a rather unorthodox style which sees him approach the fretboard with his slide hand over the top rather than underneath, Hole's name certainly deserves to be mentioned alongside those of legends like Elmore James and Duane Allman. Razor sharp assaults like "He Knows The Rules" and "Jenny Lee" strike like lightning and herald Hole's arrival as perhaps the greatest living practitioner of slide guitar blues. Triumphant..."
