CD Reviews

A Kink Alone
Wayne Klein | My Little Blue Window, USA | 11/03/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Dave's solo debut was something of a surprise to most fans. While many Kinks fans knew he was capable at writing material of the same quality as brother Ray, few really thought that Dave would finally release a solo album. This is truly a solo album as Dave plays and sings nearly everything himself. The sound quality on this remastered edition of AFL13062 is outstanding. Although Dave's later albums would wildly vary in quality, his debut has aged remarkably well. The best moments recall his strong contribution to (although intermittant)The Kinks albums. Dave's guitar playing is in top form throughout. In many respects,AFL13062 allowed Dave to left off some creative steam after a period of time with The Kinks where he was reduced to little more than a sideman. The bonus track is a nice addition to this strong collection of songs (if you have the previous edition of this on CD coupled with his second solo album you don't need to purchase this again. The bonus track is available on the Unfinished Business CD). It's nice to see this fine little album finally get the appreciation it so richly deserves."
