Synopsis

Amazon.com
The pianist-composer genius Dave Brubeck is no stranger to classical music, having studied with Darius Milhaud and performed and recorded with Leonard Bernstein. This concert, recorded December 23, 2000, at London's Barbican Centre, celebrates Brubeck's 80th birthday and teams him with the celebrated London Symphony Orchestra. It also reunites him on stage with his sons: pianist Darius, trombonist-bassist Chris, Matthew on cello, and Dan on drums. Rounding out the septet is the inventive flautist-alto saxophonist Bobby Militello and bassist Alec Dankworth. The strings swing sweetly on all the tracks, from the impressionistic "Summer Music" and the avant-rock "Four Score in Seven" to the hits "In Your Own Sweet Way" and the timeless Paul Desmond gem "Take Five." Brubeck's soloing reflects the kind of sparse, in-the pocket linearity that comes from knowing what not to play, which only a master like him would learn from a lifetime of great music-making. --Eugene Holley Jr.

CD Reviews

What a treat!
M. L. Arnautov | Bucks., UK | 11/24/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I went to the Brubeck's 85'th birthday concert with the LSO, and it was *so* good that I promptly bought this recording of the 80th birthday concert. I am very glad I did! To my mind only Chorale doesn't quite work - the rest is a joy to the ears, and I listen again and again (and then again, for good measure). Militello's sax sound is harsher than Desmond's was, but he is a great musician - just check out his solo on Take Five if you still need a proof, and his flute on Brandenburg gate is simply excellent. As for the rest, it's Dave himself, of course, plus Darius, Chris, Matthew and Dan Brubeck, plus Alec Dankworth, plus the mighty LSO conducted by Russell Gloyd -- all enjoying themselves. Do I need to say more? Some of Dan's drumming in particular is quite breath-taking, but that's not to run down anybody else's contribution.

Needless to say, almost all the pieces are by Dave himself, but there is one exception. Four Score in Seven was Darius' composition written for the occasion (as the title suggests), and it is a fitting tribute indeed - slightly edgier than dad's music, but most enjoyable none-the-less.

Above all the CD really captures the audience loving it, particularly when after Take Five they get treated to Unsquare Dance!

I return to this CD whenever I feel slightly down for whatever reason, and it never fails to lift me up. If you like Brubeck's music, and if you have any liking for a lush big band jazz sound, get this CD. You won't regret it!"
