"ok. i admit it. i like the damn personals. musically and as people. i have known them for years now and i think they are a great band. i've seen them play a million shows, good and bad - but i've always thought they were a rockin' band.anyway. i am supposed to be reviewing this album and i want to. driver driver came out a couple of years ago and i know all the words by heart. i've listened to it over and over and it still hasn't gotten old. it is a refreshingly nostalgic rock and roll album - a bit of 60s garage, a pinch of northern soul and a heart of rock'n'roll. listen to this album - not only the music, but the words. ken is a smart lyricist. clever. well influenced. i am the music listener who likes pop music. likes rock and roll. but i want it to be smart. i want to know that i could have an intellectual conversation with the bands i listen to - not that it will necesarilly happen, but i want to know that the people i am shelling out my hard earned money for are worthy of the cash. deserving. i am by no means saying that these guys are brilliant. that would be too weird and too much. what i am saying is that this is a clever album. smart, both musically and lyrically. i am listening to it as i write this and i am remembering all the things that i like about the damn personals.but, instead of believing me listen to the audio clips available here. just the snippets of these songs will prove the worth of this cd. it is one of those records that, five years from now, you will be glad you have it. when all the frat boys are jut discovering the damn personals, on their third or fourth album, you will pop in your coffee stained copy of driver driver and think 'man, i bout this back in '01' and you will know how much cooler you are than all those white-hatted 19 year olds ...these boys deserve the hype of bands like the strokes and the faint and the shins ... they deserve people to buy this album and adore them. they are great musicians. they are talent. they are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of all the great things you will see coming from boston in the next couple of years - rock and roll intelligencia returning to our town ...keep your eyes open for a new album.buy this one in the meantime."
Just like a farblow in my brain.
