CD Reviews

Two/Three, setting the pace for the future of hip-hop.
djblackout | 06/23/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Two/Three, the latest release from Ann Arbor's premiere beatsmith Tadd Mullinix, under his Dabrye alias, is a futuristic masterpiece. In an era where hip-hop is plagued by repetitive hooks and digital samples, the album comes through as a beacon of light showing others the way. Dabrye combines rattling drum patterns reminiscent of nineties hip-hop, with grimey bass lines and spine-tingling synths, creating lush instrumental tracks that sound like outtakes from an 80's sci-fi flick. Listening to the albums instrumental tracks such as "Piano", and "Machines (Pts. I & II)" you can hear a producer at the top of his game. Adding fuel to the fire are a gang of MCs whose lyrical flexing mesh intricately with Dabrye's beats. From MF Doom's blunted flow on "Air", to the verbal swordplay of Phat Kat and Jay Dee on "Game Over", the album is chock full of no-nonsense rhyme slaying that will entice casual fans to the hardest of hip-hop heads. Two/Three, the second offering in a trilogy of albums, bridges the gap between One/Three's slinky minimalist hip-hop, and shows a promising glimpse of what lay ahead."

"This is the most serious hip-hop album (as far as beats go) that I have heard in a long time. True hip hop heads pick this up.
