CD Reviews

Sample of brilliance
Alex F | 06/15/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Call it euro pop, Euro techno. I call it perfectly crafted pop music at its best.Da buzz has to be the most underrated music act i could think of. In a short span of about 7 years. The Swedish trio came out with five albums, with the last 4 being 5 star albums. When i heard "Let me love you" in 2001, I assumed it would be there one great song. Little did i know that through the years per Liden and Pier Schmid would write almost 50 songs ranging from pretty good to Brilliant. Sung flawlessly by Annika Thornquist who adopts the songs as her own. her style ranger according to the mood of the song. Sometimes resembling Belinda Carlisle and somtimes sounding Similar to Kelly Clarkson. Most of the songs are simplistic, positive love songs. As far as this greatest hits cd is concerned, it is merely a sample of Da buzz catalogue. As with most greatest hits collection many great songs get left out. this compilation is no exception. With that said based on the songs included this is easily a 5 star cd. There are 11 songs taken from their five albums with the weakest of the five, Da sound, their first cd being represented by 3 songs and the rest being represented by 2 songs each. Having listened to all five albums many times now, I would say that each album with the exception of the debut album has at least 5 standout songs and another three to four songs close to it. With only one or two songs not worthy of being in a collection cd. For myself i compiled a cd with 45 songs that in my opinion range from solid tracks to masterful. I omitted "Baby listen to me" and "Paradise" which is the only song on the cd i would call a skip. " believe in love which was their fourth and final single on Da sound album is a much better song as well as the song " I wanna be free" which wasn't a single. The cd starts with one of their best and catchiest songs "Alive" which has to be considered one of the best dance pop songs ever. It's not the only great songs on the cd. other standouts included are "tonight (is the night) " " Without breaking " "Last goodbye " " How could you leave me " " let me love you " and 2 new tracks not released as singles "Take a chance" and "Don't you ever leave me " both songs could have and should have been a single over the other new song on the cd "Baby listen to me " which outside of some interesting middle easter sounds sounds more like some of their early material which was teenage pop sounding like Ace of base and even Brittney spears. considering that Da buzz last two albums had more of a techno rock sound, i would think that either one of the 2 other new songs would have been a much better representation. My other two complaints are that both "tonight (is the night)" and " Let me love you " only appear in their superior version in the "club mix " which closes the audio section of the cd as the sixteenth and final track and is a 10 minute club mix of nine of their hit singles. The hex Hector mix of "Let me love you" is superior to the single and album version. As far as "Tonight is the night " is concerened, the single version is far superior to the Album version with a much tighter production, and sharper techno drum beat, and improved vocals by annika. You get a minute of each in the club mix which is somewhat of a tease. There are also two videos ' Do you want me" and "Alive " The group would have been better served with 5 extra songs instead. Considering so many great songs were left out. All songs clock in at about three and a half minutes. "let the music heal you" " Tonight I'm Inlove " " Stay forever young " "wanna love you forever " just to mention afew. I think a double cd with 45 songs would be a perfect representation of the brilliance of this band, which if received any radio play in the United States would have sold millions of albums. I would reccomend this cd to everyone who likes positive pop music that you could lay back and enjoy or dance to if you choose to do so. I have over 2000 cd's ranging from Abba to metallica. the beatles, tears for fears, Roxy music, ultravox,Pink floyd. Da buzz is in my opinion the best pop group of all times. I discovered their complete catalogue only recently, but i haven't been this excited listening to something new since i bought tears for fears first album "the hurting" on vinyl. Their best album is their last album titled " Last goodbye " but the previous three are 5 star albums as well. You can now get their albums shipped to you for less than $15. It's well worth the price. The production is tight, and the arrangements are superb, ranging in sound from Ace of base with songs like "Dangerous" and "Wonder where you are" to DJ Encore with songs like "Alive" and "Tonight is the night".

Even with the omissions and dubious selections of versions included, Da buzz greatest hits is easily a five star cd."
