CD Reviews

Fans of deep progressive house and trance should get this

"When I bought this cd, I'd never heard of DJ Moda, but I have found some of the previous releases in Topaz Records' Nokturnel Mix Sessions series to be interesting, so I took a chance. I am SO glad that I did! DJ Moda has crafted a wonderful set of deep, rhythmic progressive house and trance tracks here that is high quality from start to finish. People who enjoy the overall musical style of dj's like John Digweed, Sasha, Dave Seaman, Chris Fortier, Noel Sanger, Danny Zee, Dave Ralph, and others in the "progressive" mold will probably find this to their liking. On the other hand, those who prefer mixes with a harder, more driving sound (like that offered by say, Christopher Lawrence) or with a more melodic, builds-and-breaks structure (like Ferry Corsten and Tiesto) might be disappointed. For people who appreciate tracks with a deep, textured, trancey, sometimes dark feel to them, however, I recommend this highly. One particularly great thing about this mix is that with but a couple of exceptions, these tracks represent works that previously have not been included on cd mix releases. There are plenty of examples around of "good" mixes that frustrate regular fans of this style of music because the track listing is dominated by a half dozen or more well-worn anthems that have already been played to death by big name dj's over the previous six months to a year. This cd is different, however; Moda has done his homework and has come up lots of fresh material here, including one composition of his own. There are really no duds in this set. The only track that I found just a bit lacking is "You Got It" by d:fuse (a fine dj in his own right) & Joy, this because of its repetitive "cowboy"-style male vocal samples. Overall, however, this mix is a winner; get it!"

"I like dark, mysterious, low-end trance/house and this mix hits the spot for most of its duration. It took me a little while to get into it but now it is a regular in my rotation. I had never heard of DJ Moda either and if this is his debut listeners will harken back to this CD for long time to come."
