Synopsis

Amazon.com
Despite the trancy head music Dara tosses into the first few minutes of his fourth studio record, this is mostly classic minimalist drum & bass, served cold and relentless. The dark melodicism of the genre reigns throughout, with booming dub bass grooves adding color to haunting layers of rhythmic frosting. The production here is spotless, and the mix is clean and accomplished. Dara fuses his hyperanthems with occasional touches of house, most effectively in songs such as Future Cut's "Whiplash," and does provide intermittent pauses for a deep breath or two. Still, the tracks here can be inflexible, staying in a too-solid groove throughout those seamless transitions. While Dara ventures into some clever mix choices and inventive beat arrangements towards the end of the record, his efforts to make an ultrabright-sounding mix occasionally overshadow his creative impulses. Still, there are pleasures galore here for even a casual drum & bass fan, as well as abundant signs of a DJ's passion and growing turntable talents. --Matthew Cooke

CD Reviews

Severe drum & bass
Arthur F. Eisele | Guaynabo, Puerto Rico | 04/29/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A great compilation of clean, minimalist, and hard drum & bass. The mixing is so good you don't notice song changes. Do not be scared by people talking about "minimalist d&b", it doesn't equate to soft. This CD has some of the hardest beats and basslines I've ever heard. In top of being hard, the tracks are all melodic, so you won't get bored. Sometimes, in between rough parts, you hear beautiful vocals and trancy sounds, but then it returns to roughness. Tracks 11-12 are straightout classics. Forget Aphrodite and all that hiphop-d&b music looking to the past, get with the d&b of the future, buy DJ Dara's "From Here to There"."
Better than words

"Absolutely no weak tracks on this cd, and I've listened to track-12 probably 117 times already. Most of the cd is just really really good jungle/Drum&Bass, but I can't get enough of track 12 because he throughs in this amazing vocal track that has all the beauty/sensuality of portishead, except its over the most amazing low rolling bass line i've ever heard. I've also heard this track twice out at clubs. For good reason too. Buy this cd."
