Synopsis

Product Description
Cymande Renegades of Funk is an remastered best of anthology. The albums Promised Heights and Renegades of Funk comprise the entire Cymande catalogue, plus two hot remixes. This album includes rare photographs of the band, updated liner notes and their most famous hit tracks released between1972-1974. The hit track "Bra," kicks off the album in all it's remastered glory, and the album includes the tracks used in Spike Lee's movies, Crooklyn and 25th Hour.

Cymande, pronounced (sah-mahn-day), was an eight member group hailing from West Indies and Jamaica. They were the first to record a fusion of funk, jazz, soul and reggae. They had a lasting influence on two major movements in music; Dance/Rare Groove, and Hip Hop. Grandmasterflash and Kool Herc dropped Cymande's breaks at South Bronx block parties. Cymande was regularly sampled by many hip hop artists including De La Soul, Biz Markie, The Fugees and MC Solar, etc. Cymande also played the Apollo to raves and toured the USA with Al Green and Mandrill in 1973.

CD Reviews

The Best Cymande Album Ever
Julian Peryl | 07/13/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The remastering on this record is practically a facelift for this vibrant funk and jazz band. I was so happy to have selected this new release. I can't believe how good Bra sounds. I just threw away my other cymande CD. It had too many flaws in quality. Plus these unreleased tracks are total classics. I especially love Bird. What a precursor to the chilled funk sounds of some of today's contemporary artists. This is the record that gives these eight very talented musicians the credit they deserve. Cheers.

"reggae-funk lovers you will love this some of these songs have been sampled back in the early 90's by various east coast rappers I forget master ace for one used a sample on his classic me and the biz anyway the african influences are heavy love the congas, love the guitars, love the voodoo trance you get while spacing out to these songs."
