CD Reviews

Cylab remixed
E. Anderson | 07/11/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If there is one band out there that I live, eat, drink, breathe and die for, without a shadow of a doubt it is Cylab. I have pimped this band out on to a few of my friends over the years because that is how much I believe in them. Percy Trayanov (keyboard, bass, vocals, and programming), SeVerina X Sol (vocals, style and co-production), and Dre Robinson (percussion) makes up Cylab. I discovered Cylab several years ago in magazine which reviewed their first album UNPARALLEL UNIVERSE. Being a huge fan of Diva Destruction which SeVerina X Sol was once a member of, I felt compelled to check out her new project Cylab. Their sound can easily be described as a fusion of industrial and trip hop music. Their music reminds me a little of Collide however I feel their music is a lot more original given the diverse layers of synthesized beats Percy Trayanov creates. As the old adage goes, and the rest is history.

Forward to 2007, Cylab releases the remix album DISSEMINATE as their third release. I rarely buy remix cds because they often leave me cold and unimpressed. Cylab wisely selected the remixes to create a cohesive sound so that the songs would flow together in a even stream. With a lot of remix cds, the sounds are all over the place and there isn't a smooth transition from one song to another. Here on DISSEMINATE, the songs flow together effortlessly. Industrial stalwarts like Imperative Reaction and Combichrist contribute remixed versions of the band's songs. One would think their remixes would sound something like their music but you will be surprised to hear how different they sound. I think they didn't want to strip the essence of the songs and instead added a unique twist to their music without ruining them. Their efforts pays off well. What really surprised me is the excellent interpretation of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box". Cylab's version of the alternative classic is mind-blowing to say the very least.

There is not one single song on DISSEMINATE that I did not enjoy. This is one remixed cd that did not bore me to tears. It is anything but repetitive.
