"What a relief it is to hear an album like this when the scene is being totally oversaturated with technical hardcore bands that wish they could hold a candle to The Dillinger Escape Plan. A release like this acts as a proverbial enema for the current metal scene, flushing out the flood of talentless clone acts, just trying to hop on a trend wagon while it's still moving (See: The Red Chord, Between The Buried and Me, PsyOpus, The End, Ed Gein, and countless others).



Now onto Crowpath's music. Hailing from Sweden, Crowpath's style is highly uncharacteristc of the more typically melodic sound of their homeland; featuring abrasive, churning guitar work and insanley detailed and nuanced percussion (drummer Erik Hall's cymbal work is of particular note). The songs' spastic progressions and time changes are reminiscent of other more math-tinged bands like the aforementioned Dillinger Escape Plan, but with a primal ferocity unheard of in this style of music. While the current trend in the tech metal genre seems to be overwhelmingly focused on precision and virtuousity, Crowpath instead shift the focus on intensity by creating an utter sense of dread and darkness through the relentless, almost tribal pummelling of the syncopated rhythms. Crowpath unleash an almost unbearable assualt on the senses that is rivaled by no one.



I can sit here and attempt to describe their sound all day, but there is an intangible element to their music that defies words. What must be understood is that Crowpath is a band that is still highly unrecognized in a world where bands like The Black Dahlia Murder are claiming all the glory totally undeserved. Buy this album, or any of their past efforts! Although, Son Of Sulphur would probably be the best place to start as it much more varied and slightly more accessible, overall, than their previous albums. Brilliant!

"Crowpath just gets better and better with each album. You don't even bother trying to classify this band, because they have created their own sound. So jagged, sludgy yet technical at the same time, heavy, intense, powerful. Dissonant yet melodic. 'Son of Sulphur' is just as good as their previous album, 'Red On Chrome,' maybe even better. At a time in which popular music is at possibly the lowest, most pathetic point in history, it is great to see bands like Crowpath utterly destroy mediocrity."
